Good afternoon Brits, Can y'all explain this?

I read somewhere how scammers sold a bridge in New York to loads of different people. Can't remember which bridge, the Manhatten Bridge maybe? But anyway, people who thought they owned the bridge tried to set up toll booths on it. They didn't own it, and neither did the person that sold it to them. And the police had to stop them from charging people from their little toll booths. LOL. That must've been ages ago!
