Is there a limit to how many lights can go on a 15 amp circuit with a 14 gauge wire?

I have a knowledgeable friend coming to help with a minor basement repair, but I'm interested in having him add a few lights and a few outlets to the existing circuit. I know I could upgrade to 20 amp breaker and thicker wire, but this question is just about the feasibility of using what is already in place.
